MATT TAYLOR DELIGHTED WITH THE CULTURE BEING CREATED AT WEALDSTONE
Wealdstone manager Matt Taylor was delighted with his team's performance after the 2-0 win in the National League Cup against Derby County U21s, making it two wins on the bounce in the competition.
"We wanted to put Saturday (defeat to Wycombe) behind us quickly and we did that. I was delighted with the team's intensity today and performance levels. We know the discourse around this competition (National League Cup) but it's one we want to go on and win."
Henry Sandat opened the scoring with a well taken effort just five minutes into the game, his second goal in as many consecutive National League Cup appearances. Deon Woodman doubled the lead with an acrobatic finish midway through the second half.
"Henry (Sandat) took his goal really well and I was impressed with him today. Deon (Woodman) as well has come in and scored a really good goal. I feel like we're creating a culture at the club where everyone in the squad is playing their part. The players that are coming in are giving their all in these games and pushing for spots."
There was a debut for Stones academy player Jeffrey Sekyere, who replaced Josh Grant with five minutes to go. The young striker came close to scoring his first professional goal when he won the ball high up, but smashed his effort over the bar with just the keeper to beat.
"Delighted for Jeffrey (Sekyere) to come in today, he did well and almost got himself a goal. The team train on Monday and Tuesday at Brunel, which is where the Academy train and play, so we can speak to the coaches and watch the team train. Having worked in Academy set ups I know how hard it is to bridge that gap from U18s to 21s to the first team."
Up next for Taylor's side is a third successive cup game, this time in the FA Trophy, when they travel to the EBB Stadium to face Aldershot Town, who the Stones defeated 2-0 in the League just a few weeks ago.
"Another competition we want to go out and win. We beat them at their place a few weeks ago so they'll want to go out and avenge that. They may come into the game with a different tactical set up after that result."
