Matthews leaves Wealdstone

Sam Matthews has had his contract cancelled by mutual consent.

The 25-year-old wide player signed at the end of October and made substitute appearances against Dorking Wanderers and Dagenham & Redbridge either side of a first start against Notts County, but the journey from the south coast for training and games has proved too much for the former Bournemouth, Crawley and Eastleigh man so it was agreed his deal, which was only until January, has been terminated.

"Unfortunately the travel for Sam was too much," said manager Stuart Maynard. "He lives past Bournemouth and for him to keep travelling in from that distance, wasn’t feasible. Even trying to do it, shows you his desire and ambition to get back into the EFL.

"We thank Sam for his professionalism and attitude while he was with us. Some things in football just can’t work for one reason or another, and this was the case here. He’s a top player and we hope he goes on and gets back to where he should be."
