REPORT | WEALDSTONE 4-2 EBBSFLEET

Nicole Cho-Yee

Wealdstone climbed out of the relegation zone with their third win on the bounce, defeating Ebbsfleet United at Grosvenor Vale.

The Stones fought back from going behind twice against ten-man Fleet to win 4-2 and move up to 18th position in the league.

Braces from Alex Reid and Harrison Sohna cancelled out goals from Franklin Domi and Anthony Stewart, as Wealdstonecontinued their excellent run of form.

Gibson named an unchanged line-up to the side that beat Braintree Town midweek.

The Fleet, made the perfect start, snatching the lead in style after just 17 minutes, as Domi latched onto a rebound and rifled the ball past Luca Gunter into the top corner.

Three minutes later, the Stones were close to equalising when Sohna curled an effort from the edge of the area, which flew just over the crossbar.

Next, it was Ebbsfleet United’s turn to nearly score, with Aaron Cosgrave firing marginally wide from range, in the 24th minute.

Wealdstone did not have to wait long to be back on level terms, as top scorer Reid was fouled in the box, and duly stepped up to clinically fire past Mark Collins.

However, the Stones’ lead was short-lived as George Moncur’s dangerous free-kick was headed home at the far post by Stewart, to edge the Fleet into the lead again.

As end-to-end action ensued, it was no surprise Gibson’s men equalised in stoppage time, with Sohna drilling the ball home past Collins, after Max Kretzschmar’s initial header was blocked.

As the sides returned from the interval all square, the Stones were the first to come close to drawing first blood, as Reid raced forward and struck on target, but Collins responded with a solid save.

Gibson showed his intent, making a treble substitution in the 58thminute, which nearly proved fruitful, but Reid’s chip from an acute flew agonisingly wide.

Wealdstone’s manager’s role of the dice paid dividends in the 69th minute, as man-of-the-match Sohna struck a stunning free-kick from range that rocketed into the top corner, to seal his brace.

Bolstered by the goal, the Stones were relentless in their pursuit of a forth, and who else but Reid to notch his second, coolly firing Kretzschmar’s cross past Collins, for his tenth league goal of the season.

There was late drama at the Vale as the Fleet were reduced to ten-men in the 83rd minute as Mustapha Olagunju was shown a second yellow and sent his marching orders.

Wealdstone return to action on Tuesday evening when they host Boston United at Grosvenor Vale, in a 7.45pm kick-off.

WEALDSTONE: Gunter (GK), Grant, Mariappa, McAvoy (Cook 58'), Hutchinson, Eastmond (Dyer 58'), Sohna, Georgiou (Boldewijn 58'), Kretzschmar, Obiero, Reid.
