SUCCESSFUL FIRST DAY FOR WEALDSTONE FC ACADEMY SITE AT HARROW COLLEGE
Spirits were high as our academy site at Harrow College opened for the first time on Tuesday. Students enrolled in the morning at the Central Harrow Campus, just a minute's walk from Harrow on the Hill station, before heading over to their training base at Bannister Outdoor Sports Centre.
They would then take part in their first Wealdstone FC training session with the Head of the Wealdstone Academy at Harrow College, Nathan Hickey. A journey which of course takes the students past the old Lower Mead Stadium and through Wealdstone itself.
The collaboration offers students the unique opportunity to balance their academic pursuits with their passion for football. It aligns perfectly with the club’s vision for the future, allowing the manager to work with a pool of young, homegrown talent. Additionally, this partnership positively impacts our local communities, creating new opportunities for young players to showcase their skills and dedication.
“We’ve been looking for a new academy partner and Wealdstone being a local club to us seemed the best direction to move in,” said Jake Wood, Head of Sport at Harrow College.
“Any students enrolled on a sports course at Harrow College have the opportunity to play within the new academy and it will appeal to 16 -19-year-olds that are committed to progressing through to a career, not just in professional football but also in sports”
Cameron Mawer, Head of Wealdstone Academy, also emphasised the importance of this partnership. “Working with an institution like Harrow College is a tremendous opportunity for us. It ensures that students receive an excellent education while following the Wealdstone FC pathway to the first team.”
"They (the students) will also be taking courses that could lead to careers in various fields, such as professional sports, coaching, sports therapy, fitness, leisure management, teaching, higher education, and overseas scholarships.
“Harrow College will benefit greatly from this partnership, as we bring in disciplined, focused young men and help them grow in the right way,” added Mawer.
“For Wealdstone FC, this could mean discovering the next big talent. We are always on the lookout for promising players, aiming to develop our U19 and U23 academies with the hope of progressing them to the first team.”
Nathan Hickey, Head of Wealdstone Academy at Harrow Campus, expressed his enthusiasm. “It was a fantastic first day at the college, meeting with all the academic staff, recruitment team, and players. This is a significant deal secured by the club, promising a bright future ahead.”
