TIGHT AFFAIR AT DAGENHAM IN SEASON OPENER
Wealdstone began their National League campaign with a narrow 2-1 defeat against Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday afternoon.
Sam Ashford's header in the 72nd minute brought the Stones level after Dagenham had taken the lead earlier in the second half. However, a late goal from the Daggers ten minutes later ensured Wealdstone left the Chigwell Construction Stadium empty-handed.
The match kicked off with an early scare for Wealdstone as Dagenham’s Rees slid in at the back post, but his effort struck the woodwork, sparing the Stones from an early deficit.
Midway through the first half, Wealdstone had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock.
The Stones were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, and Georgiou's superb strike looked destined for the top corner, only for the Dagenham keeper to tip it over the bar.
Dagenham thought they had found the net a few minutes later, but Grego-Cox’s effort was ruled out for offside, much to the relief of the Wealdstone defence.
Despite the disallowed goal, Dagenham eventually took the lead early in the second half when Rees found the bottom corner, giving the home side a 1-0 advantage.
The Stones fought back and equalised in the 72nd minute. Ashford connected with a cross at the back post, heading it powerfully into the net to level the scores.
However, the parity didn’t last long. Just ten minutes later, Pereira struck for Dagenham, restoring their lead and ultimately securing all three points for the hosts. Wealdstone pushed forward in search of another equaliser, but despite a positive performance, they couldn’t find the breakthrough needed to salvage a point.
The Stones will aim to bounce back in their first home game of the season against Oldham Athletic at The Vale on Saturday, 17th August, with kick-off at 3pm.
